TheDangersOfTeenSubstanceAbuse

Teen drug use is a problem that is on the rise. In fact, it is estimated that 18.8 percent of 12th graders used an illicit drug in 2007. When many people hear the term “substance abuse” they think about someone who is using an illicit drug. However, it is important to note that teen prescription drug abuse is also on the rise. Nearly 15 percent of 12th graders used a prescription drug for a non-medical purpose in 2007.

Abusing a prescription drug can be just as dangerous as using an illicit drug. Below are some of the long-term effects of prescription drug abuse:

Addiction
Prescription medications can potentially be addictive. If a person uses a medication in an inappropriate way, then his or her chances of getting addicted to it are even higher. Prescription drug addiction is extremely difficult to break without professional help. If a person tries to stop using the drug, then he or she may experience unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.

Nervousness, sweating, shaking and nausea are some of the most commonly reported withdrawal symptoms. Keep in mind that withdrawing from a drug without medical help can also be very dangerous. The reason that people experience withdrawal symptoms after they quit using a drug is because their bodies have become dependent on it.

Health Problems
Even though prescription drugs are designed to treat various health problems, they can also cause health problems if they are used inappropriately. Opioids, which are a type of painkiller, can cause infertility, slowed breathing, mood changes and choking. A person can also go into a coma if he or she abuses opioids.

Tranquilizers and sedatives can cause seizures and memory problems. Stimulants can cause increased heartbeat and body temperature. Furthermore, abuse of any type of prescription drug can result in death.

Other Problems
Prescription drug abuse can also lead to a number of other problems. Teens who abuse prescription drugs are more likely to drop out of school. They are also more likely to be involved in a car accident. Additionally, it is illegal to take someone else’s medication or use a medication for a reason other than its intended person. People are also more likely to commit crimes when they abuse drugs.
